Mega Caps Continued to Outperform Major U.S. Indexes as the Russell Top 50 Mega Cap Index Reflected 7.2% Gain in 3Q12

SEATTLE, WA — (Marketwire) — 10/03/12 — The Russell Top 50® Mega Cap Index has consistently outperformed all major U.S. indexes so far in 2012, reflecting a return of 7.2% in the third quarter and 19.4% YTD through September 28. The Index, which measures the performance of the largest companies in the Russell 3000® Index, includes approximately 50 of the largest securities based on a combination of their market cap and current index membership and represents approximately 40% of the total market capitalization of the Russell 3000.

“The largest U.S. stocks today appear to be viewed as somewhat of a safe haven by investors as they generally have less volatility, higher dividend yields and lower P/E ratios than smaller stocks,” said Russell Investments chief markets strategist Stephen Wood.

The Russell Global Index includes more than 10,000 securities in 48 countries and covers 98% of the investable global market. All securities in the index are classified according to size, region, country and sector. Daily Returns for the main components are available here:
