World Grill and Barbecue Championship 2011 in Germany

Gronau (ehr) – A town in the Münster region in Westphalia, Germany, almost on the border of the Netherlands, will be hosting the 12th World Barbecue Championship this year. Gronau, also famous as the birthplace of Udo Lindenberg, one of Germany”s longest established rock stars, will from the 20th to the 22nd May be the place where the best barbecuers in the world will compete. On this weekend in May, the eyes of the barbecue world will be on this border country town, as the international grilling and barbecuing elite demonstrate their masterly skills on the extensive site of the Landesgartenschau horticultural park.

More than just a sausage grilling competition
To gain points here, competitors will have to convince an international specialist jury of the quality of the appearance, taste and consistency of their dishes. According to the strict rules, they will have to present a 5-course menu with side dishes. Spare ribs, chicken, shoulder of pork, brisket of beef and a desert. This last, of course, will also have to be grilled! Grill teams from all over the world will be firing up their barbecues, because as well as championship honours the award also includes 30,000 euros of prize money, to be distributed among the best of the teams. Over 50 teams have already agreed to take part. The number of international competitors is limited to 100. The final registration date is the 15th March.

A barbecue festival
Three days on site with the barbecues and the stage. Watching the very best grillers and barbecuers at work, enjoying the numerous events on the stage or elsewhere on the event site, and spoiling yourself with culinary treats. A true festival for everyone. Your palate, your eyes and ears will all be well satisfied at this barbecue festival. Gronau has in the past demonstrated, often impressively, how to run successful large-scale events: the Landesgartenschau (State Horticultural Show), the German Barbecue Championships, and regular international events such as the Gronau Jazz Days – the town is well equipped to host the World Barbecue Championship 2011.

The organisers, the German Barbecue Association e.V., are counting on 100,000 visitors for this mega-event. To quote their president, Robert Meyer: “We can look forward to a host town which is working with enthusiasm and commitment to ensure that we have the party of the year.”
