President of the Treasury Board Tony Clement to Meet with American Business Leaders in Washington

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA — (Marketwire) — 10/11/11 — The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for FedNor, is undertaking meetings in Washington D.C. to hear and share best practices related to fiscal management and advancing Open Government.

“While the Canadian economy has shown resilience during the economic downturn, the risks to the global economy remain serious,” said Minister Clement. “We want to ensure that we can continue to invest in the priorities of Canadians while keeping taxes low so our economy can continue to grow and create jobs.”

During his visit, the Minister will deliver a speech at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the world-s largest business federation. Minister Clement will address members of the Canada – U.S. Business Council who share Canada-s deep interest in carrying on mutually beneficial conversations. He will speak about the Government of Canada-s efforts to return to a balanced budget by 2014-2015 and reduce the deficit.

A meeting with Steven VanRoekel, the Chief Information Officer of the United States Federal Government is also planned. Minister Clement plans to discuss the Government of Canada-s recent letter of intent to join the international .

Engaging with the governments of the United States and other countries is an important aspect of this international partnership. The partnership is an opportunity to share knowledge of transparency, citizen participation, technology and innovation. The Minister-s visit to Washington will advance the Government of Canada-s commitment to fostering Open Government and its leadership role in increasing governmental transparency and accountability.
