The Russell Netherlands Defensive Index Reflected a +2.1% Return YTD Through November 15, While the Russell Middle East North Africa Defensive Index Posted a (-15.0%) Return for the Same Time Period

SEATTLE, WA — (Marketwire) — 11/18/11 — The Russell Netherlands Defensive Index posted a positive return of +2.1% year-to-date, while the Russell Middle East North Africa Defensive Index reflected a loss of (-15.0%) year-to-date through November 15. Quarter-to-date, the Russell Netherlands Defensive Index (+9.1%) outperformed the Russell Netherlands Dynamic Index (+4.2%) by 4.9 percentage points, through November 15.

“The effects of the ongoing debt crisis and policy deficit in Europe is evidenced in part by the performance of Russell-s Netherlands Indexes, as defensive stocks have outperformed dynamic stocks both quarter and year-to-date, as investors vacillate between risk-on and risk-off,” said Stephen Wood, New York-based Chief Market Strategist for Russell Investments.

The Russell Middle East North Africa (MENA) Dynamic Index suffered a significant loss of (-25.0%) year-to-date through November 15, underperforming the Russell MENA Defensive Index which reflected a relatively smaller (-15.0%) loss for the same time period.

Quarter-to-date, the Russell MENA Dynamic Index reflected a 0.9% return, marginally outperforming the Russell MENA Defensive Index (-1.4%) through November 15, 2011.

The Russell Global Defensive and Dynamic Indexes split the broad equity market in half based on a combination of stability factors; the more stable half of the market is called “Defensive” and the less stable half is called “Dynamic.”
