MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwire) — 03/11/12 — Lower road tax, female drivers and inconsiderate motorists are some of the best and worst things about British roads according to a survey by Swinton.
The retailer surveyed its customers about motoring in Britain and despite being tarnished with a bad reputation for driving, 41.1% of respondents voted women as the best drivers on the roads, with men trailing behind at 31.5%. Over 10% of those questioned think bus drivers are the best – possibly due to the amount of knowledge and experience bus drivers have at manoeuvring large vehicles and the amount of time spent behind the wheel.
With the average annual road tax topping nearly GBP 200 it is no surprise that 82.6% would lower road tax if they could change one thing about motoring in Britain. Despite the unpopularity of speed cameras, only 12.5% would look to abolish them, with many feeling that they serve a purpose in helping to make the UK-s roads safer for drivers and pedestrians.
Inconsiderate drivers cause the most problems on British roads according to 71.2% of those surveyed, while the unpredictable British weather accounts for 10.3% of the problems. Not signalling (40.1%) and tailgating (24.5%) are the most annoying things about other drivers on the road. Failure to signal or keep distance whilst behind the wheel is classed as improper driving and is the cause of thousands of road accidents each year.
Shockingly, 35.1% of motorists admitted to the criminal offence of driving while using a mobile phone, further increasing the risk of a road accident, and 32.4% have thrown litter from their vehicle which can leave drivers facing a fine of up to GBP 2,500.
